Why should I consider mediation?

Divorce mediation is a voluntary settlement process that allows couples to resolve their differences in a non-adversarial way. It is an alternative to adversarial proceedings (litigation) or adversarial negotiations, and for many couples it is a faster and less expensive way to make decisions affecting the future lives of each other and their children. All of the issues that normally would be addressed in litigation, including child custody and parenting time, child support, spousal maintenance, and property division, are dealt with by the couple in a direct and non-adversarial manner. For many couples, mediation offers the opportunity to take charge of their futures and control the decisions that affect their lives. Each couple can create a separation agreement tailored to each spouse's and the children's individual needs. Most importantly, mediation protects children from the hostility and fighting often associated with the litigated divorce. In addition, when post-divorce problems arise, many couples prefer the non-adversarial nature of mediation to resolve parenting and support issues.
