Charles L. Nichols, J.D.

Mr. Nichols earned his law degree from the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State (graduating Cum Laude). Prior to obtaining his law degree, he also earned a Bachelor of Science degree (in chemistry) from the University of Michigan and a Master's degree in biochemistry with honors from Oakland University.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mr. Nichols served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and made two combat cruises to Viet Nam aboard the USS Enterprise.

Following the Navy, Mr. Nichols worked for the Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company in Detroit as Manager of Regulatory Affairs.

He then joined a prominent downtown Detroit law firm where he became a partner specializing in family law matters as well as personal injury litigation, including medical malpractice and drug product liability cases. He has tried cases to verdicts and negotiated settlements in excess of ten million dollars.

In 1989, Mr. Nichols started his own law firm and expanded his practice to include probate matters, estate planning, family law (with special emphasis on divorce counseling and divorce mediation), real estate (both residential and commercial), developer/builder litigation, municipal law, the buying and selling of businesses and small business incorporation. He has continued to handle medical malpractice and plaintiff's personal injury cases.

In his 27 years of practicing law, Mr. Nichols has also developed expertise as a mediator and arbitrator. He is the founder and president of Michigan Mediation Centers, Inc. and is the executive director of its subsidiaries which include the Dearborn Mediation Center and the Birmingham Mediation Center. He is past President and currently a member of the Michigan Council for Family and Divorce Mediation. He is also a member of the national Association for Conflict Resolution as well as a certified mediator for the United States Postal Service.

Mr. Nichols is also active as a teacher and lecturer. He is on the staff of the Dearborn Adult Education Program where he teaches several classes including estate planning, divorce, marketing and even a very popular class entitled "A Divorce Attorney's Advice on How to Stay Happily Married."

Mr. Nichols is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the State Bar of Michigan, the national Association for Conflict Resolution, the Michigan Council for Family and Divorce Mediation (past President), the Downriver Bar Association, the Dearborn Bar Association, the Hellenic Bar Association (past President) and the Wayne County Family Law Bar Association. He is listed in Who's Who in American Law. He is also the author of "Michigan Civil Litigation Techniques, Active Roles for Legal Assistants" and "How to Settle Personal Injury Cases in Michigan."

As a father of five, Mr. Nichols enjoys recreational activities with his family. He and his wife, Susan, are active participants in a variety of school, church, and community functions in Northville and in Dearborn including baseball where Mr. Nichols has been a Little League coach and Boy Scouts where he is an assistant scout master.
